Letter from Victor P. Lysenyuk (Ukraina)

Dear Dr. Shimotsuura

We are so sorry about severe earthquake and tsunami which happened in Japan this March. Also, we know of following a series of accidents at Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant. Ukrainian mass media inform us in details how events go in Japan. All Ukrainians, even children in schools discuss current situation.

It is announced that Ukrainian rescue team (50 members) and a large transport plane with equipments are ready to start from the first days of the disaster. Today, another Ukrainian plane has landed in Japan. It has brought humanitarian aid (blankets and medicines). Ukraine is ready to take in the children's resort Artek 250 Japanese children. This offering was conveyed to Japanese Ambassador by our President who expressed condolences before the lost Japanese.

As for recommendations from survivors, you certainly know that we endured the same accident of Chernobyl in Kiev in 1986. Then at first we tried to take away our children into potentially clean areas of the country. Iodine medicaments should be taken as a prevention of thyroid cancer. When radioactive clouds came in Kiev all people tried to stay in-door and not to ventilate the house. Then in order to avoid a radionuclide contamination, food should be enriched with pectin and bioflavonoids (mostly red fruit and vegetables). Probably, small doses of alcohol may be useful for adults to decrease anxiety. Daily behavior depends on current radioactive situation.

Hopefully, these terrible things will be improved. We wish you every success.

Sincerely yours,
